Who we are...

What we believe...

We are part of the Episcopal branch of the Jesus Movement, as our Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry says.  We are an open and affirming community of ordinary people trying our best to model our lives on the life, death, and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  We welcome people from all walks of life, in all stages of their own spiritual journey.  We welcome people into the full life of the church no matter their race, age, gender identity, or sexual preference.  We are a sacramental community, which affirms the saving power of Jesus Christ through Baptism, Communion, and other sacramental rites of the Church.

We seek to be a church that is part of God’s renewal of all things. Emmanuel is a 150+ year old church with a strong foundation in mission, worship, and making disciples. At the same time we desire to follow the fresh wind of the Holy Spirit to meet the challenges of our time.

With open and welcoming hearts, we invite you to walk with us — growing together — spiritually, as followers of Jesus Christ in the world.

  • As Episcopalians, we are followers of Jesus Christ, our Lord, and believe in God who is Trinity in Unity.
  • We strive to love our neighbors as ourselves and respect the dignity of every person.
  • The Episcopal Church is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion and traces its heritage to the beginnings of Christianity.
  • Our liturgy retains ancient structure and traditions and is celebrated in many languages throughout the world.
  • We welcome our baptized members to be ordained as bishops, priests, and deacons: men, women, non-binary, gay, straight, trans, and asexual.
  • We believe in amendment of life, the forgiveness of sin, and life everlasting.
  • Lay people exercise a vital role in the governance and ministry of our Church.
  • Holy Communion may be received by all baptized Christians, not just members of the Episcopal Church.
  • Episcopalians recognize that there is grace after divorce and do not deny the sacraments to those who have been divorced.
  • We affirm that issues such as birth control, abortion, conscientious objection, etc., are matters of personal, informed conscience.
  • We celebrate our unity in Christ while honoring our differences, always putting the work of love before uniformity of opinion.
  • All are welcome to find a spiritual home in the Episcopal Church.

What to Expect at our Worship

  • Appropriate dress is anything from jeans and flip flops to coat and tie, hats and gloves.
  • We offer a full-service bulletin linked to our Home page each week to guide you through our service.
  • Don't worry about not knowing what to do or say. We will carry you through the service until you become comfortable with our rhythms.
  • As Robin Williams once said, we do practice "pew aerobics" but standing, sitting, or kneeling are a personal choice, not required, throughout the service.
For our younger ones, there is a "Pray-ground," a soft space for children in the chapel which is connected to our worship space but separate, enabling the little ones to move about and play while hearing and seeing the worship happening in their midst.
Activity packs, books, chalk board, and space to walk around are lovingly provided. Parents are asked to accompany their children in the Pray-ground, where the service can be seen and heard.

Thomas Bray Children's Library

Exploring the diversity of God’s love through reading and listening, this library is available in the side corridor during all worship services.
